In 1919, Sultan ordered domestic courts-martial to try members of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) for their role in taking the Ottoman Empire into World War I. The courts-martial blamed the members of CUP for pursuing a war that did not fit into the notion of millet. The Armenian issue was used as a tool to punish the leaders of the CUP. Most of the documents generated in these courts were later moved to international trials. The military court found that it was the will of the CUP to eliminate the Armenians physically, via its special organization.

The Republic of Turkey does not accept that the Ottoman Empire attempted to exterminate the Armenian people. Turkey acknowledges that during World War 1 many Armenians died, but counters that Turks died as well, and claims that the number of Armenian victims have been inflated, and that massacres were committed by both sides as a result of inter-ethnic violence and the wider conflict of World War 1. The denial of the Armenian Genocide is often identified by genocide scholars and historians as a crucial symbolic and ideological process which follows every genocide and which is intended to desensitize and to make possible the emergence of new forms of genocidal violence in the future.

I found it very interesting that at one point after World War 1 the new Turkish government basically admitted that genocide had taken place when they used it as evidence to convict war criminals, but now they deny that there ever was a genocide, just wartime deaths of Armenians. They state that the genocide never took place and there is no proof to support that it ever occurred. To support their argument the Turkish Government has inserted information into scholarly circles creating controversy. They are using any means to keep other nations from releasing any information to the public. While all of these methods were successful to covering it up, now that the internet exists information can be shared freely to most parts of the world. The Turkish Government should admit that the genocide occurred because the information now accessible to all with the internet so the information has reached the public and in time the genocide will become well known because of the efforts of Armenians and Historians trying to obtain justice. While admitting to committing genocide is tough for any nation, there is a larger threat, that of denying history so the Turkish Government and all the other governments that deny the genocide to keep relations with Turkey strong should admit that it happened and make reparations to ensure genocide doesn't occur again.
