Staying Positive

Before this past reading assignment, Vladek was an annoying character in my eyes. He seemed like someone who would not take your ideas into consideration, nor did he seem to be considerate and sweet to others. He was a person who felt sorry for himself and was only looking out for his well-being. Once I gained perspective about Vladek during the Holocaust, I realized that he was a different person. Vladek never gave up hope. He kept on wanting to hide and make sure that he and his family stayed intact. He also was picking up Anja when she was down, which is very hard to do, especially when his spirits weren't exactly high. The most remarkable part about his positive attitude is that he is positive during the most negative of all times. He is positive when it matters most. His wife's suicide had a profound effect on his outlook on life. He became pessimistic about everything because he felt that the void in his heart and life could never be filled again.
