Unpredictable

Today in class we discussed about the unpredictability of evil. Evil cannot be seen or felt; evil people are harder to be identified as evil. There is no specific formula that provides people the information to conclude if something is evil or if something evil will occur. This idea is again proven in Nightfather with the example of wars. When the little girl asks Simon about wars, including when it would start and how long it would last, Simon could not provide her a concrete answer. "[He] shrugs. 'Tomorrow afternoon? Next week? It may have started already, you can never tell with wars.'"(54) All Simon can do is predict, but even then his predictions can be extremely off. Again when the girl asks about how long wars will last, "'Maybe a year,' says Simon. 'But it could easily be longer, just think of the Eighty Years' War...'"(54) Like evil, war is unpredictable; no one knows what will happen, not even when it starts. War comes and goes, and everyday there's always a possibility for war to explode. The most ordinary man can be evil; the most simple fight can lead to a war. The possibilities are endless; to detect the ordinary from the ordinary is no simple task. That is why the most ordinary evil person can hardly be captured and why wars can start at any single day it chooses to do so. There is no pattern, or formula, or list; everything is unpredictable.
