I read an article online that explained all about an attack on Elie Wiesel that took place on February 1, 2007. He was in San Francisco at the time and a 22 year old Holocaust denier tried to drag Wiesel into a hotel room. His final intentions were unknown. Wiesel was unhurt and Hunt fled the scene immediately. Hunt was not caught until he began to brag about the attack he attempted on Wiesel, on a Holocaust denial website. Hunt is extremely anti-semetic and strongly dislikes any prominent Jews. Hunt was arrested and eventually prosecuted, the final verdict being that he must serve 2 years in prison. He was released early on probation due to good behavior, but is now forced to undergo psychological treatment. After the verdict, District Attorney Kamala Harris said, "Crimes motivated by hate are among the most reprehensible of offenses. ... This defendant has been made to answer for an unwarranted and biased attack on a man who has dedicated his life to peace." This article i found clearly shows the type of racism and denial that still takes place to this day. People don't believe that such events took place, and many are turning to violence against Jews as a way to show their beliefs. They feel they must prove themselves, even if it means assaulting an elderly man who has clearly done nothing that stood for anything other than peace. Without more people like Elie Wiesel standing up for peace, many events of the Holocaust would go unknown. I don't understand how one could deny the events that clearly took place, with evidence everywhere and stories from survivors like the novel we are currently reading. This article about Eric Hunt, a Holocaust denier, has really opened my eyes to the situation.
