In class a few days ago (maybe a week) we talked about how many people who were arrested for participating in genocides/holocaust used "I was just following orders" as a defence. As I was reading i noticed that on pages 15 and 16 when all of the Jews were playing their belongings in the backyard of Elie's house. "Followed by Jewish Police, who, their voices breaking, told us: The time has come... you must leave all this..." (pg 16). What are some reasons that these officers felt remorse? Was it because they could understand how the people felt because they were also Jewish?
